The Award Goes To…

Each of these performers, activists and comedians is participating in the annual Pride rally, and each is so great we’re had to give special categories prizes just for them!

By Matthew Tharrett

Most Ludicrous Long Island Lesbian Latina Award: Marga Gomez, for traveling the world and spreading laughs as one of the first openly lesbian comedians.

Most Impressive Improv Award: Michael Serrato, for his many hilarious regular character performances on Logo’s Big Gay Sketch Show as Tranny Nanny Heaven, Bear in the Burbs and the PFLAG Mom.

Their Album Title Sounds Like Us Award: Telling On Trixie, because this gay-fronted rock band has a growing fanbase with the recent success of their first studio album, Ugly, Broke & Sober.

Least Likely to Get Offended Award: Gender Offenders, for theatrical and visually stimulating artwork that challenges modern gender constraints.

She Shot the Sheriff Award: Mélange Lavonne, an openly gay Hip-Hop artist who uses her innovative and intense lyrics to fight against homophobic society.

Ja Makin’ Gay Waves Award: Michael Ashanti, a Jamaican singer, songwriter and performer raised in upstate New York whose his first album, All of Me, is about to make a splash.

The You-May-Kiss-the-Bride Award: Catherine Marino-Thomas, the Board President of Marriage Equality New York, for working towards legal recognition of gender-neutral marriage in the state of New York.

Healing the World Certificate: Ken Wong, recognized worldwide for his work with the Face-to-Face AIDS Project and raising awareness for the AIDS pandemic in Africa and Asia.

Most Disrespectfully De-Recruited: Corey Andrew, a recording artist and activist who was recently spurned by military recruiters under DADT and who’s working to support gay equality both at home and abroad.

Fierce and Fearless Female: Staceyann Chin, Tony-nominated performance artist and political activist working to empower women.

The Last of the International Playboys: Khalid Rivera, recording artist and Broadway star with a number of chic film credits and international tours under his belt.

They Flew The Furthest to Get to Pride Prize: Sugarbeach, an Australian electro-pop power lesbian recording duo and couple determined to positively influence the gay community.

The Favorite Native Son Nomination: Michael Lynch, a gay singer/songwriter and performance artist starring in his one-man show about growing up gay in New York City.

The Captain and Tennille Award: Jason & deMarco, gay couple extraordinaire touring the United States and Europe with a set of catchy duets and power ballads devoted to gay love.

Most Often Confused with a Spice: Rachael Sage will do nothing to make your dinner taste better, but she will add spice to Pride with her band, The Sequins.

The Most Fun to Take to Musical Mondays: Broadway Voices, a new group made up of the voices from the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus bringing a new and unique twist to the Broadway songbook.

Silver-Tongue Trophy: August Gold, a nationally recognized innovative speaker and co-author of several inspirational books.

Best Patchwork: Cleve Jones, for his work in the AIDS-affected community, and for spearheading the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

Dustin Lance Black will not receive a trophy this year, since he already won an Academy Award. We do, however, appreciate his work in writing and producing some of the most influential gay films of the decade, including Milk.

We tried to give The Imperial Court of New York a tiara, but it wouldn’t fit on the wigs of the members of this drag and philanthropic organization because of the crowns already there.

See everyone get their (imaginary) trophies on Saturday, June 20, from 2pm–6pm in Bryant Park (42nd St @ Sixth Ave). Visit HOPINC.org for more info.
