BROADWAY CD REVIEWS

By David Hurst

Critic's Pick
Steven Brinberg Simply Barbra: The Duets Album

Steven Brinberg’s Simply Barbra: The Duets Album is a stroke of genius. Broadway stars like Debbie Gravitte, Alix Korey, Heather MacRae, Karen Mason and KT Sullivan join Brinberg to record songs Streisand herself wouldn’t dream of touching—and they all sound fabulous! Just wait till you hear him with Kaye Ballard, Hugh Panaro and the legendary Mimi Hines (a famous Funny Girl herself). They’re divas one and all. (LML Music)

2006 London Cast Sunday in the Park with George

If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about over the impending Broadway transfer of London’s Menier Chocolate Factory production of Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, you’ll wonder no more after hearing this new recording. Starring Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell, this Sunday is dazzling, allowing you to hear as if for the first time a show you thought you knew in all its color and light. (PS Classics)

Justin Hayford It All Belongs to You

Chicago-based out balladeer Justin Hayford strikes gold again on his third solo disc It All Belongs to You. Subtitled Unsung Cole Porter, Hayford’s silky-smooth tenor is a perfect compliment to his understated piano stylings. His choice of material, as on his first two recordings, is impeccable. Perfect for cocktails, a soak in a hot tub or both, It All Belongs to You is irresistible. (LML Music)

2006 Broadway Cast Company

Having listened to Dean Jones, Elaine Stritch and the original 1970 cast of Company my entire life, this recording of the John Doyle-directed revival cast starring Raul Esparza came as a pleasant surprise. Initially you’ll miss the original orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick and the Vocal Minority. But Esparza and company strip Sondheim’s brilliance down to the bone, making a valid case for a new recording of a classic. (Nonesuch/PS Classic)

Charlotte Rae Songs I Taught My Mother

If you only know Charlotte Rae from Diff’rent Strokes and The Facts of Life you’re in for a real treat. An accomplished singer, Rae recorded this album fifty years ago, appropriately subtitled Silly, Sinful & Satiric Selections. It’s a crazy grab-bag of eclectic material young performers would do well to learn. (PS Classics)

Original Broadway Cast Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me

On Broadway last fall the zany, madcap music that Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman wrote for Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me whizzed by so fast it was easy to miss how sharp and clever it really was. That problem’s solved now, with Ghostlight Record’s sparkling new cast recording of Short and company in all their ridiculous glory. You’ll laugh out loud at the outrageous absurdity of it all. (Ghostlight Records)
